DESIGN PROCESS:  (Not every project includes the complete process below.  The process shown is intended to assist an Owner in the understanding of what could be involved during the course of a project.)

  • Programming
'Programming' is the information-gathering portion of a project.  During this phase, the owner provides the designer with the information to create a design that will meet the needs of the owner. Site documentation is included in this phase. Photographs and measurements are used to prepare
a base plan from which to review site issues, such as grade
& drainage, privacy, circulation, property setbacks, climate & solar aspects, etc. Knowledge of existing conditions and direction from the client is the foundation for the project.

  • Concept Plan / Plant Selection
The concept plan is used to convey design ideas and solutions to the owner and is accompanied by elevations, photos, material samples, and sketches, in addition to preliminary plant selection, to assist the owner in visualizing the new design.

  • Master Plan
The master plan shows the final design. It locates hardscape and plant materials in relationship to the site and architecture. It shows the shapes and sizes of hardscape and massing of plants.  The type of hardscape and plants are identified.

  • Planting Plan, Plant List & Details
The planting plan locates and identifies each plant in relationship to the hardscape and architecture
.  The plant list gives each plant by botanical and common name, the quantity and recommended purchase size and additional notes as needed.  Details on proper plant installation are provided.

  • Hardscape Plan & Details
The hardscape plan shows existing and new hardscape, i.e. paths, decks, patios, retaining walls, etc.  It also provides conceptual details that describe the appearance and location of new hardscape and assist the homeowner or contractor in their efforts to engineer each item, as local codes may require.

  • During-Installation Services
Observation and coordination services are available during installation, either as consultant to the Owner during a DIY project or to report the Contractor's progress in meeting the design specified in the installation documents.

  • Hourly Consultation
MILIEUX DESIGN STUDIO LLC is available on an hourly basis to consult with the Owner on color, plants, furnishings & accessories selection, purchases, etc.  We have a 2-hour minimum for an initial consultation.

  • Garden Coaching
Vanessa Nagel has gardened for over 35 years.  Her ability to coach new garden owners is invaluable in helping them maintain their own garden or to instruct a garden maintenance crew with special situations.  Garden coaching counsels gardeners in their own gardens.  Consider it if you need advice during a garden renovation, especially.  Great for new gardeners!!  Two-hour minimum applies.

  • Request information about the 6-hour design consultation.

    How We Work

We provide hourly consultations or a flat fee for a defined scope of services.  Consultations are a minimum of 2 hours.  Subsequent time is billed hourly.  A fixed project fee can be established once the scope of services is defined.  A letter of agreement is provided with a fixed fee.  Typically, after the initial 2 hour consultation, 1/2 of the entire fee is due upon presentation of the concept plan, with the remaining half of the fee due upon delivery of the final documents.  We do not charge time and mileage within a 20 mile radius of our address.  Mileage costs are standard IRS rates for the current calendar year.  Hourly consultations & retainers are paid at the time of the consultation or initial meeting.
